Taking a significant leap forward in workflow support for ophthalmic surgery

The modular ophthalmology microscope platform Proveo 8 takes another significant step forward with further enhanced visualization and workflow support. The latest enhancements of the platform concern the core microscope and include brighter illumination for further optimized red reflex and automated adjustment of settings that respond to surgical visualization needs at every stage of anterior and posterior segment procedures. The new features further expand the benefits of the versatile platform which offers innovative optical technology and digital imaging extensions such as intrasurgical OCT and the IOLcompass pro guidance system.

“To achieve optimal clinical outcome, ophthalmic surgeons require the best possible image at every moment of a procedure” says Markus Lusser, President Leica Microsystems. “To meet this need we designed the Proveo 8 from the beginning as a complete platform solution that brings together optical innovations with digital imaging and responsive workflow features. The latest enhancements underline our commitment to ensuring the platform outperforms expectations. Surgeons can rely on having precise visual information at every stage of surgery, without losing time manually adjusting the microscope.”

The Proveo 8 microscope provides precise visualization due to built-in optical innovations such as FusionOptics technology and the newly enhanced CoAx 4 illumination. FusionOptics combines increased depth of field with high resolution for an expanded area in full focus, limiting the need for refocusing during surgery. CoAx4 Illumination delivers light through four individual beam paths for stable, constant red reflex. With the new enhancement, the illumination of the Proveo 8 provides surgeons with the highest contrast visualization even during phacoemulsification.

Smart workflow features support surgical efficiency by limiting the need for manual adjustment. The Proveo 8 includes pre-settings for magnification, focus and light according to surgery type and phase. During surgery, the surgeon simply taps the wireless footswitch to active the settings for the next phase or to adjust focal plane or microscope angle. For contact-free, wide angle viewing of the fundus during vitreoretinal surgery, the BIOM 5 accessory from OCULUS is now fully synchronized with the focus of the microscope. This allows for very quick adjustment and ensures the front lens does not move vertically in relation to the eye.

Leica Microsystems will showcase the Proveo 8 microscope platform with enhanced illumination and workflow features at the 35th Congress of the European Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgeons (ESCRS) in Lisbon, Portugal on October 7 to 10.

Other opportunities to see the Proveo 8 live are the 71st Annual Congress of Japan Clinical Ophthalmology from October 12 to 15 in Tokyo, Japan, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) Annual Meeting from November 11 to 14 in New Orleans, USA.

Visitors to the booths can experience all the benefits of the Proveo 8 ophthalmic microscope platform in combination with integrated digital imaging technologies including the IOLcompass Pro guidance system and EnFocus intrasurgical OCT. Each imaging solution enhances the surgeon’s decision-making basis with real-time supplementary information.
